Prof. Jörg Wrachtrup and Prof. Harald Gießen are two of the world’s most highly cited scientists

December 18, 2019

Stuttgart physicists Prof. Jörg Wrachtrup and Prof. Harald Gießen have been listed in this year's “Highly Cited Researchers”, which means that they are among the top 1 percent in the world of the most highly cited scientists. This is a repeat success for both. Wrachtrup is listed with 20 publications in the field of physics and Gießen with 17 “highly cited papers” in the fields of  physics and material sciences (crossfield). Both researchers have published three publications with more than 1000 citations, which have opened up entirely new fields of research. Prof. Jaya Narayan Sahu is also listed. During the evaluation period, he was a recipient of the Humboldt scholarship and conducted research at the Institute for Theoretical Chemistry at the University of Stuttgart.

Publications are deemed “highly cited” when they are in the top 1 percent of the most cited publications in their relevant field. Clarivate Analytics evaluates how often a publication is cited in papers written by colleagues. This is considered the most important figure in terms of scientific work and also in terms of the influence of the author in the relevant field of research. The List der Highly Cited Researchers comprises a total of 3,700 researchers from 21 disciplines, 327 in Germany.

Prof. Jörg Wrachtrup is director of the Institute of Physics (3) at the University of Stuttgart and works in the field of quantum technology. He is considered a pioneer in the field of the optical properties of diamonds used in quantum sensors. Prof. Harald Gießen, is director of the Institute of Physics (4) at the University of Stuttgart, and researches ultra-fast nano-optics. He is considered a pioneer in the field of highly sensitive plasmonic sensors, and is also founder of 3D printed micro-optics, which made it possible to create the world’s smallest endoscope.
