In his research, Prof. Frank Allgöwer focuses on the development of new methods in systems and control theory, with a particular emphasis on nonlinear, networked, predictive, and data-driven control. Control engineering provides a methodological foundation for intelligent, highly automated, and autonomous systems – such as self-driving vehicles, modern robotics, and intelligent production and energy distribution systems.
Recognition for outstanding contributions in the field of systems and control engineering
Through the EUCA Fellow award, the European Control Association (EUCA) honors individuals who have made a significant impact on the field of control and systems theory through their outstanding contributions and achievements. The EUCA is presenting this award for the first time this year – Allgöwer is thus among the first ten fellows.
As a European network for systems and control engineering, EUCA promotes scientific exchange, particularly through international conferences. Allgöwer accepted the Fellowship award on July 8, 2026, at the European Control Conference, the most important scientific conference on systems and control engineering in Europe.
ACA Fellow Award goes to a European for the first time
As early as June 19, 2026, Allgöwer became the first European to receive the Fellow Award from the Asian Control Association (ACA). The ACA Fellow Award is one of the highest honors bestowed by the Asian control engineering community.
The ACA is the leading network for researchers in systems and control engineering in the Asia-Pacific region. Through the Fellow Award, it recognizes outstanding scientific achievements and lasting contributions to the field.
About Frank Allgöwer
Frank Allgöwer heads the Institute for Institute for Systems Theory and Automatic Control (IST) at the University of Stuttgart. In addition to his research, he is active in academic and university committees as well as in national and international professional organizations. He is also the editor or co-editor of several international academic journals.
His wide-ranging roles in scientific organizations include, for example, serving as Vice President of the German Research Foundation (DFG) from 2012 to 2020, President of the International Federation of Automatic Control (IFAC) from 2017 to 2020, and Vice President of the IEEE Control Systems Society from 2013 to 2014.
Allgöwer has received numerous awards for his scientific achievements. Among his most notable honors are the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize from the German Research Foundation (2004), the Baden-Württemberg State Teaching Award (2007), and an honorary doctorate from Uppsala University in Sweden (2024). In addition, he is a member of the Heidelberg Academy of Science.
