How do cognitive processes such as perception, attention, and memory work? Tenure-track professor Benedikt Ehinger wants to gain a better understanding of the brain. Through his research, he is laying the groundwork for knowledge that could, for example, help improve the treatment of stroke patients in the future.
Ehinger's research group is developing methodological approaches to combine electroencephalography (EEG), eye tracking, and cognitive modeling. EEG studies make it possible to measure the brain's electrical activity in real time. These are typically conducted in static scenarios. Ehinger's goal is to develop new algorithms and methods that will enable the precise analysis of brain activity measurements even when test subjects and objects are in motion – that is, in a scenario that is much closer to real life.
Ehinger's tenure-track professorship in Computational Cognitive Science is based at the Stuttgart Center for Simulation Science (SC SimTech) and the Institute for Visualization and Interactive Systems (VIS). This means he is part of a strong research environment: VIS is a leading institute for visualization and human-computer interaction and offers an excellent infrastructure for interdisciplinary projects. SC Simtech brings together scientists from fields such as computer science, mathematics, engineering, physics, and biology. Together, they develop innovative simulation and data science methods to solve complex problems in research and industry.
