From trade school to high tech university - future rooted in tradition

The University of Stuttgart is situated in the heart of one of Europe's greatest high-tech regions. The former "Technische Hochschule" (Technical University) has developed into a highly reputable institution for education and research, which has its focus on science and engineering. Amongst others, its outstanding position is mirrored in the Cluster of Excellencer "Simulation Technology" and the Graduate School for advanced Manufacturing Engineering as well as in numerous special research fields, projects and doctorate programs. One of its strength is the cross linking between engineering and natural sciences as well as between humanities and social sciences.

In 2004, the University of Stuttgart celebrated its 175th anniversary. The foundation of the "Vereinigte Real- und Gewerbeschule" in Stuttgart in 1829 was one of the turning points which marked the beginning of the Industrial Age in Württemberg as well as the starting point of the development of the University of Stuttgart. It followed the example of Karlsruhe (1825), Berlin (1821) and Paris (1794), where similar institutions were built up.
